Every time I come here the status page says something is being upgraded on the 4G network. What exactly is being upgraded?

Official Response
Hi First Class - For the most part when you these notifications (which is something new in an effort to better communicate with our customers) and you notice that they are impacting a number of communities or locations it has to do with the transport network.

This can be a fibre network that we are upgrading the equipment on that will either immediately provide more capacity or bandwidth or it is being done as part of a program that will eventually provide more bandwidth or capacity once additional work is completed.

Some of the recent ones are actually on our wireless partner's network and they use a microwave system for their transport and the reason the work takes place during the day is that it requires people to be up the towers making these changes.

Other times there is work being done to our network components that have proprietary software or hardware that needs to be kept current to maintain support or for future features to be enabled.  We do this work in "maintenance windows" which are usually from 1:00am to 6:00am and typically the impacts are about 30 minutes or less as we move traffic to redundant components.

We may be doing slightly more of this work this year but in all honesty it has been going on like this for a number of years - we just haven't been as public and utilizing social media as a communication tool like we are now.

Hope that helps a bit.
