According to the website here it says unlocking is $50 plus taxes... however, it also states that unlocking is FREE... the "$50 charge does not apply if you are travelling outside of North America (Canada, U.S., and Mexico)"  ... so how does one go about getting this done prior to travel?  http://www.mts.ca/mts/support/wireless/devices/unlock+your+mts+mobile+device+for+use+with+other+carr...

Hey Debbie,

If you are travelling outside of North America, then yes that information is correct and you can have that charge waived for sure.

In order to have the charge not applied, you will need to give a quick call to our friendly Customer Care agents at 204-225-5687 and follow the prompts for wireless. Please be sure to mention that you are travelling outside of North America and they will know what to do. They'll walk you through what happens after the unlock is done.

With some phones there are additional steps required in order to ensure that the handset will accept another SIM card from an alternate provider.

Thanks Debbie, have a great day!
