Slow cellular data Winnipeg Beach

Once again cellular data speeds are unusable in Winnipeg beach. 4 signal bars on HSPA and getting 0.23Mbps download. This has gone on ever since HSPA was deployed. Getting tired of this MTS!! And no it is not my device, this is the same on neighbours devices also who are with Rogers as well. Tempting to contact the CCTS on this issue.

Hi Dan,

Can you send some more detailed information to community@mts.ca and have them forward it to me?

I'm looking for
  - the exact lat/long (or street address, lat/long preferred) that you were observing this behaviour
  - the times/dates you were running the speed tests
  - phone number of the device the test were being run on

Our network stats are showing the average speed on hspa being a multiple of what you experienced but with all normal distributions there are some on the low end, it may be a shadowing issue or something else. The above will let me run some engineering traces on the session and maybe shed some light. If you have a samsung android, pressing *#0011# also provides some extra info on your signal level and cell you're attached to.

I'll take a look

Looks like upgrades may be coming your way.  This is from the MTS upgrade notification site:

Oct 19: We are completing a network upgrade between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. <snip>  HSPA voice and LTE data in <snip>, Winnipeg Beach <snip> for up to 30 minutes.

I sure hope so! This morning the speeds are horrible again

I took a look at the stats and I show no change over the last few days on your sector, I have a feeling it is transport related, I'll put some inquiries in next week to our partner's transport team.

Thank you Graham! Today has been another day of slow speeds again. Hopefully the partner's team will fix this issue. Sharing a network does have its pros and cons. That leads me to another question, when the HSPA was being launched, how did the engineers and designers choose whether to use a existing Rogers GSM tower or an existing MTS CDMA tower? For example in my area here in Winnipeg beach, there is a MTS and Rogers tower side by side about a mile apart. I know here it is the Rogers tower that was converted to HSPA and LTE, how was the decision made to use the Rogers tower vs the MTS tower?

Hi Dan, that is another good question and for the most part it's decided on a case by case basis on what makes sense for that area, in terms of position relative to population, tower height, existing transport, serviceability, and a few other factors.

Good morning Dan,

Please do email that information Graham asked for to community@mts.ca I'll watch for it and forward it onto him.

Just wondering Dan did the upgrades that MTS was planning to overnight in Winnipeg Beach  make any difference?

Hey Clifford, I am in Winnipeg right now, didn't even pick up my phone this morning out there, I will let you know on here when I have a chance to test out the speeds.

Just ran a speed test in the North end of Winnipeg and was getting 13Mbps download on HSPA! That for sure breaks the record of fastest speeds I've seen on HSPA

Besides Winnipeg Beach and other select areas in Manitoba,  MTS also had a  scheduled whole network wide outage  this morning, so maybe some tuning was done as part of it.

Once again, HSPA speeds are unusable. Can't even send an iMessage over the HSPA network. Have 4 signal bars doesn't matter if I'm inside or outside. LTE not much better only averaging around 3Mbps download. This HSPA issue is getting a little annoying since its been nearly 4 years on going now. Shows me in a great reception area. Also I know this a partner tower and I've really noticed the data speed averagely seem much slower on the partner towers vs MTS towers.

Now HSPA data isn't even working. Not getting iMessages even. When I switch to LTE everything works great but only get one bar of LTE and sometimes drops to HSPA. Getting very frustrated with the service in my area. Going to be going to the CCTS.

Looks like MTS has another upgrade in the Winnipeg Beach Area that may improve service for you.

Jan 13: We are completing a network upgrade between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., which may impact HSPA voice and data services for up to 30 minutes in Gimli, Stonewall, Teulon and Winnipeg Beach.

Gooooood!! All of those areas need it! Winnipeg Beach, Stonewall and Tuelon have extremely slow HSPA data speeds. These areas all use partnere towers (Rogers) could be the reason why their so slow!
