New Nexus?

Just wondering if there's any chance of MTS getting the new Nexus devices when they launch. I know that they're not announced yet, but rumoured to be on September 29. Since MTS carries the Nexus 6 and other LG and Huawei phones, is this a possibility?

Hi Jason,

We haven't heard any juicy rumors about it yet, but once we do, we'll let you know!
(I'd like to know myself-it would be a nice addition to our line up of hardware).

So now that these devices are officially announced, are there any plans for MTS to carry them? Or will they only be offered through the Google Store here like they will be in the states?

I'd like to know this as well. Would rather upgrade through MTS, than buy outright from the States.

Hi Jason and Niko,

I have my ear to the ground and I am waiting for updates on whether or not we will be carrying them.
Once I know, I will share with you here. :)

Any new developments? Just switched my home phone and internet to MTS to join my wireless device. Holding out on an upgrade for this one.

Only one big carrier has announced a release date (Oct 26). Seems others know they are coming but lacking some of the details still.

Reading the tea leaves on the Internet it seems pretty likely MTS will be getting them as other Canadian carriers has announced their plans although a few details (ie device storage) are currently missing. It also looks like if it comes to MTS you may be limited to a single colour choice. Also looks like the devices are coming in about a month's time. This isn't official confirmation though.

If they do come I'd sure like to see MTS stock more storage options.  32 GB of non-expandable memory just won't cut it for me.

It's not just MTS, most carriers will only have the new Nexus phones with the lowest storage tier. If you want a high level of onboard storage and a Nexus phone you need to order it directly from Google.

That's really unfortunate, I can say as much as I'd like to get the nexus 5X I will definitely not be getting it if 16 GB is the only option. And more than likely, I won't get it through Google either.

It was sad to see that Canadian carriers were limited (currently) to the 32GB Note 5 variant, where you saw one or two U.S. Carriers received the 64GB version as well.   I guess Samsung was testing the Canadian market first, and maybe we will see the 64GB version next year?  It's sad since the Note 5 is supposed to be like their work horse, and offered only a minimal size (and no SD card support).
This is the device I'd like to look at getting...I'd just be annoyed if I got it and say two months later the 64GB version releases....that extra wiggle room would be nice.  My current (old) device is 16GB but has SD card of 16GB in it (which isn't full) but still total device plus SD card has me pushing near 21GB used.

Does anyone know what the usable amount of space is available on a Note 5 out of the box from MTS?

I think the challenge with the larger capacity devices is they are slower moving. It seems that most carriers try to stock their current device offerings in store too. This means the Note 5 with 64 GB would have a number of units shipped to stores which may end up sitting there until they are marked down and sold at a loss (or whatever happens to end of life phones). For this reason I think the carriers shy away from the larger storage offerings.

Most retailers only want so much money spent into the inventory at one time. Having the same phone at a larger size that will most likely not sell as quickly is risky seeing as it costs a couple hundred (at most) more than the smaller model.

I would also like to know. If you guys do get the 6P then I will gladly start a contract with you. Currently with Rogers but contract is over and I don't really want to be giving those assholes money anymore.

Hello everyone,

There's some not so good news I came across this morning, the Nexus 6P launch is delayed for sale in Canada as per Mobile Syrup's website. I checked the Google Store's website and it shows they are 'currently out of stock'.

Additionally, here is the information requested from our handset crew at MTS:
"At this time we do not have any plans to carry
the new Nexus devices however; we always  evaluate our lineup carefully to
ensure we carry competitive, in-demand handsets. Additionally, it is our
understanding that to date, there are no Canadian carriers offering this device
and that so far, it is being sold through Google directly."

Hopefully Friday will bring us something good for the weekend ahead!

The handset crew is wrong. Bell has commented on their social media regarding the release date for the new Nexus phone through their retail channels. Also Rogers has the Nexus 6P listed as available on their web site at the link below. I cannot find anything either way on Telus.

http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wirelessBuyFlow?forwardTo=PhoneThenPlan&productType=normal&pr...

Edit: normally I would not post links to competitors but as the statement is that the phone is not available from other carriers I wanted to share the link to prove that statement is incorrect.

Hopefully the handset team reviews their offerings and can bring the Nexus to the MTS lineup. Purchasing the phone from Google is a good although expensive alternative. Being able to purchase a phone outside the MTS channel is often something that cannot easily be done for other manufacturers.

According to this website: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/28/nexus-5x-and-6p-will-be-available-online-only-wont-be-sold-i...

No US Carriers will be getting the 5X and the 6P.  If that is the same for Canada you will only be able to buy the phone from Google's store.

The pattern with Nexus phones is that carriers get the base level of storage. For the Nexus 6P that would be 32 GB. From the carriers that have announced they are following that pattern. If you want more storage built in you need to order directly from the Google Play store.

Hearing reports that the 128 GB models of the new Nexus phones have likely been cancelled by Google. This is based on reports that all pre-orders directly to Google have been delayed.

You can buy it then get a subsidized phone from MTS when you sign your contract.  Then sell the MTS phone.  That's what I did, it is a lot of money up front but you get it back in a month or so when you sell the MTS phone.  I actually ended up with a small profit when it was all done.

Sadly, the Nexus line does not get the same level of respect from consumers as Samsung and Apple. The lack of customer interest results in less carrier interest.

I gleaned current information from the handset team, they are still indicating that we do not have any plans to carry the new Nexus devices. I apologize for the disappointing news.

I'd like to know where you got your rogers pre-order 500 units information from.

I do agree with your device subsidy post completely

The Rogers pre-order count could be suspect but it comes from Reddit where it was mentioned they had "458 pre-orders". Elsewhere it has been confirmed the pre-order system is nation wide, not regional.

I really feel if MTS dropped their plan prices by $20/month across the board and offered device financing over two years opposed to the current subsidy model it would give them a strong competitive position. The big three aren't going to be quickly able to respond to the type of change as even though they offer Manitoba specific plans they are still based around hardware subsidies. I like the idea behind Total Internet but find the math doesn't work out for me, shifting device subsidies though would be different.

I like how huawei in the states partners with affirm to offer financing for the phone. Does anyone know of a company that would do this in Canada?

Cory: According to a Rogers document we obtained, “Due to an inventory shortage from Huawei on the grey Nexus 6P, Rogers has not received enough inventory of the device to deliver to stores in time for launch.

I keep track of your replies and send them along. :)

"we do not have any plans to carry the xxxxxxx devices"

This really is the standard MTS reply we get whenever any new device is released.

I'll reiterate again, it sure would be nice to have this and maybe other phones as ones that MTS could "order in".  If MTS is concerned about stock , don't stock it just order for customers at their request. Nexus phones have a very loyal following and will be happy to have this as an option and wait a week or two.

I've been off contract for a while and I have thoughts about switching when the line up isn't as competitive as it could be. Nexus 6P will get me to sign a contract.

Again, if MTS move to not included any device subsidy in their plans you could then got out and find financing for your device separately. This would have about the same monthly impact as the current structure but with a lot of added flexibility.

Like Huawei, there should be a partner who comes in and does the financing.

Actually... MTS does have the rental part of their business, my parents 'rented' their land line from MTS for many years. Just do a rent to own on cell phones, in other words financing

I also will sign a contract same day as soon as the 6P becomes available.  otherwise i continue off contract on my nexus 5 until it dies.  And when it does and MTS still has no Nexus 5P, on to Rogers I go.
