I just noticed the Pay Phone that stood on the street corner of Norway Ave. and York St. in Ponemah Manitoba has been removed. Assuming it was removed in the fall. How come it's gone now? Many people used that. I know the man across the street from it used it all the time as he did not have a landline or cell phone.

My undersranding is most pay phones are actually privately operated. The property owner pays a rate higher than the residential phone rate to offer the phone and then keeps the revenue it makes. With the strong shift to wireless the revenue on pay phones is now often well short of the monthly cost leading property owners to discontinue the service.

I will check with the local municapilty here to see if they know anything about it.

Hi Dan,

While I can't speak to that specific payphone, as I don't know which one it may have been, I can tell you that there are several reasons a phone will be removed.

1) The phone can not be maintained in a functional state due to ongoing vandalism.
2) The phone is on Private Property and the Agent for the phone wants it removed
3) The phone is on Public Property, but receives power for an adjacent private property, and the owner of the property no longer wishes to provide power
4) The phone is no longer used to sufficient level to justify its remaining in service - This is based on several other factors including proximity of other payphones, and serviceability.

Typically, the majority of payphone removals fall into #2 and #3, which is the say the Private Agent that contracted with MTS for one reason or another no longer wished for the phone to be there.

Just looked it up in Google maps and its a stand alone MTS blue enclosure   on a boulevard, so I would put my morning coffee money on reason #4.  Power comes from the adjacent hydro pole so MTS would be paying for it.

Yes that is correct Clifford. It couldn't be much power since this Pay Phone booth had no lights in it and the phone did not have a screen on it like most pay phones had. Many summer cottage owners still did use this phone, as some do not have cell phones or it is not cost effective to have a land line phone if they are only here a few days out of the summer.

Thank you for the feedback, Dan. :) I'll pass this onto the teams here at MTS so they're aware of the usage by summer cottage owners.

The challenge is it might break even or make a little money for the four cottage months and lose money for eight.

That sounds like the old Brown or Blue Centurion  payphones from Northern Telecom that stopped being made in the 1980's.

Those are classics and collectors will snap them up when they come available through the different Telco's Asset Recovery departments.

just looked at google maps, can't say for sure, but it looks like a Millennium Phone, not a Centurion.

None-the-less, thanks for bringing this to my attention, I will look into it.

Just was talking to some people, and they say MTS took the phone out of there back in October, and left the booth laying on its side on the ground, and a local resident took it and it's standing up in his back yard somewhere.

Hi Dan, Clifford,

I just got a message back from the payphone folks regarding that specific phone.  Turns out it was a Centurion phone and was not serviceable.  They were going to replace the phone with a Millennium, however there was no power available off the nearby light standard or from the pole.(Centurions are powered from the twisted pair, so don't need additional power)

They removed the phone, however the booth was the older larger one that could not be moved without a larger truck.  When our tech returned the next day with a bigger truck the booth was missing.

I was further told that our records showed it had not been used since early 2013, and there were no service tickets or complaints associated with the phone or location.

If there is a renewed demand for a phone it that area, let us know and we can look at alternatives to that location.

thanks for the info Arnold.    I bet somebody is playing Superman or Get Smart  with it in their back yard.  Not sure what else one would do with a phone booth unless cutting it up for scrap.

Betting it has been retro fitted as a TARDIS.

I was thinking of that but thought it would be easier to build one new,  than try and enlarge a North American size booth.

That is some good info Arnold - thanks. On an unrelated topic - why do some people have "kissy lips" beside their name??

I think the "kissy lips" may be the champion cup icon on the left side.
