There is a MTS / Roger co-locate  tower on Dobbie @ Golspie, a Rogers / MTS co-locate on Golspie @ Chelsea, and the MTS / Rogers co-locate behind the Shoppers Drugs on Molson and Concordia.

I thought all 3 towers were set up for LTE and should be giving us a good signal in EK.

I just turned off my wi-fi and noticed that I am also only getting 2 bars of LTE and Iive by the Chelsea tower.

I only get 2 bars as well off that same tower.

Is there a map of the towers somewhere?

Golspie used to go through until EH Price got permission from the city to take over Neil Ave and Golspie (but thats another story)

I think that tower's LTE is not on...because I live with-in a 10 min walk of that tower and I still only get 2 bars of LTE in this area, yet downtown I have full bars.

I agree LTE SUCKS IN EK. I have turned my brand new S5 off LTE and over to 4G to save battery life from constantly trying to search for a signal.

Is there a Map of LTE sites in the city of Winnipeg online somewhere?

Just cause I like you guys I will fire up my laptop in the next hour and tell you where the closest lte site is to the area. Don't tell me your adress just give me the street and maybe the nearest intersection.

Would the two high schools in the area (Miles Mac and Kildonan East)  cause local cell site congestion during the school day? You have a large number of kids with cells within one or two km of each other.

OK, This is just for LTE - it is no secret that MTS and Rogers share an HSPA and LTE network, however for the most part HSPA and LTE aren't on the same sites in the City of Winnipeg.

Kimberly and Henderson - tower near Golspie
Greene - tower near Golspie
Chelsea and Roch - tower near Golspie
Eade Cres - tower near Burnett Ave.

Closer to Henderson the signal from that site will get a bit weaker and it is possible to be served from a site on Main street which is just across the river.

Over the course of 2015 we will be adding LTE to more existing sites in Winnipeg to densify the network and provide better coverage - especially in buildings.

As far as the schools go I don't think that is a major factor, they are not served off the same site.

Thanks for your questions...now let's hope the Jets can hang on to this lead...

I assume KE would be the one by Concordia hospital?

As for "Golspie" I assume it's the one by Chelsea or is it the one by doobie? Thanks

It's the site a bit further south. There are two pretty close to each other.

Gordon1111 sorry I should have been more clearer I was referring to what tower it would connect to... I know the area. Lol

Thanks Jason, yeah the one further south is doobie... That makes sense now, because I am pretty close to the Chelsea one and would have expected stronger signal of it was that one. Thank you for all your help on this Friday evening. Hope you have a great weekend.

Jason,
One other question do you know if  the 100 year old power lines from Point du Bois (former Winnipeg Hydro) that run through EK / Elmwood  would have any impact on signal quality.  Right now you drive under the one remaining circuit in service  and if your on AM radio it impacts the reception because of the poor condition of the cables.   Manitoba Hydro is building a new line next to it and it should be running by mid 2015.

Hi Clifford - I don't think there should be a measurable impact on signal quality in the overall area, perhaps right close to the power lines there could be some interference but it wouldn't impact a large swath in EK.  I will double check next week with some of the technical folks, if there is something there I will post.

Hi K - We haven't had any network failures in the area in the past week - the good news is that we are working on adding LTE to a site off of Henderson Hwy on Whellams Lane and this will help to spread some traffic around and improve service in EK.  We are hoping to get this done in the next couple of months.

From riding the bus every day through there I do know that the LTE coverage degrades a bit from north of Kimberly to around Elmwood - then gets better before just before the river (at least that is what I see on my phone).

I start noticing better LTE close to the Disraeli bridge like around Johnson Ave. then after that full LTE bars. I just hope that improves it as there is an LTE tower just off Gateway and I believe Whellams Lane is farther than Gateway.

By the way I might see you on the bus one day I take 11 each morning ! lol. Thanks for your reply. Gordon

Around the Johnson / Disraeli area you are probably picking up the MTS  tower by the Louise Bridge next to the Seniors home on Stadcona.

Sorry guys that site doesn't have LTE on it...LTE as you travel south on Disraeli will likely be coming from a site on Higgins and/or one near Main Street.

It can be tough to keep track of what is where - especially if the sites are on buildings and not towers.

Having a brain lock day here at work, I can't remember if  LTE runs on a particular frequency.

I have been using the map for a few years that K from Canada posted a few replys above and its good for showing towers that have been registered with Industry Canada.  I just don't usually click on the frequency box  to see what is registered to the tower.

Rossmere country club said MTS is putting a tower up on their property soon. That should improve the coverage.

a little more on the Rossmere tower:

This tower will be 31 meters tall and be erected in late May or early June.  The tower is only 4 feet wide at the base and narrows to 2 feet tall at the top. It will be a grey, unpainted, stand alone, lattice type of tower. Trees 30-40 feet tall will surround the tower which will be seen when teeing off of the 14th hole.

The Rossmere web site says it should take 3 weeks to install 1 to improve the access rd off of Roch and 2 weeks for the actuall install.

Then it will take however long MTS needs to do there stuff to get the tower tuned and in service.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Hopefully will be in the next couple of months (before winter). I have to turn my phone to HSPA/GSM (pain in the butt- and having to remember to change it back to LTE/HSPA/GSM when I go to another area of the city) or WIFI so I don't drain my battery and have a connection when I am at home at the moment

I also dont have any improved lte reception at my house on Kimberly Ave.  I dont even bother switching back and forth as the one bar doesnt bother me no more; I really do appreciate the LTE speeds when im not at home and when I am at home the 99 percent of the time on on my home wifi.

The rossmere tower will greatly improve my reception. I look forward to it. I'm close to Raliegh and I get two bars in the living room, 1 bar in other parts of the house. Lte is 30 down, 3 up in living room. 10 down and 2 up anywhere else in the house currently

I looked today at the Rossmere Golf Course web site and there is no more mention of the cell tower going in since they talked about it in the spring.

I wonder if for budget reasons MTS backed out of doing it for the 2015 fiscal year or are they now waiting for the end of the golf season so the installation crews on the tower are not a distraction for the golfers.

Plans are still underway to have a site in that location before the end of the year.  There are many things that could delay it though.

And yes the coverage at Kimberly and Henderson isn't great - I drive and catch the bus there often myself.

Just thinking you, Gordon111 and I must pass in aisles of that Safeway on occasion and not know it.

It would have been nice if the Wi-Fi that was in there would have been left in place after Safeway closed the Starbucks.

I wonder what the chances are of MTS getting a Wi-Fi node in that store?

It's too bad there is no chance of them incorporating a hidden cell site in the tall Safeway sign on the corner of Bronx and Henderson.

All depends what goes in, if its retail there may be somebody with their own branded WI-Fi (like Home Depot or Ikea ) or they may become a MTS, Shaw or Telus public hot spot.

Now you have me thinking, I wonder if MTS has ever tried to make a business case to put localized  public wifi in their pay telephone enclosures?

The on street payphone at Henderson and Kimberly already has power and a phone line so it would just be a matter of provisioning DSL to the line at the serving dslam and finding a way to put an environmentally rugged modem/ router in a tamper proof enclosure.
Photo of CoryB

CoryB, Champion

  • 27,658 Points 20k badge 2x thumb
I would suspect if someone truly wanted you could take the outer shell of an old payphone and rework the internals to offer both a slimmed down payphone and a wifi hotspot. The challenge would be what is the fiscal benefit to someone like MTS operating such WiFi hotspots.

On the note of Hotspots, I have been near the Henderson Library and they have MTS WIFI and MTS Wireless. I connect to both but I can only actually get on the internet on the MTS Wireless one.... Are these two separate ones for Internet customers and Wireless customers hence the two separate networks?
Photo of Graham

  • 6,872 Points 5k badge 2x thumb
I'm not the wifi guy but I can answer that one, the MTS Wireless one is the network that MTS cellphone's will automatically authenticate against using their SIM, the other hotspot one is for home internet users that may not have an MTS Wireless device or others who wish to pay for access.
