I just upgraded my phone and contract and would like to get my previous phone (iPhone 4) unlocked to use SIM cards from other providers. Where do I start?

Here is the unlocking info web page from MTS

http://www.mts.ca/mts/support/wireless/devices/unlock+your+mts+mobile+device+for+use+with+other+carr...

Looks like a $50 charge for them to generate the code and send it to you.

maybe a  MTS select store would be able to  provide an unlock code in a situation like this.

I am thinking you would pay at the MTS Select Location  for the code, after they do the required security checks to make sure the phone is not lost, stolen, from a defaulted account etc.

you could also call  MTS @   204-CALLMTS  (204-225-5687) or use the  web chat icon on the top right hand side of the unlock form page from a pc or laptop (doesn't work from a mobile phone) and see if they have the option to give you a code with a credit card payment.

I'll try the web chat tomorrow. Going to their store could be tricky as I'm in Ontario with the phone. :-)

Jessica, how long into a NEW contract before you can request a phone to be unlocked?

And why are the newer MTS devices not unlocked? - Samsung Note as example.   My Z10 came unlocked right from the start when I got it at launch.

Hey Justin, it used to be 90 days but now you can unlock a device right away after signing a new contract. Some of the devices come at a default unlock from the device manufacturer which we don't have a part in deciding, which was what you experienced with the Z10.

I would say that being unlocked by default is for sure a better deal for your customers, no?  Quite satisfied that my Z10 came factory unlocked.
