Hi Jasmine, Cell phones work a little differently than walkie talkies.
On a two-way radio, one handset sends a signal directly to another handset. With cell phones, the cell phone sends a signal to a wireless tower, which is then connected by fibre to MTS's core network. The signal travels along fibre to another wireless tower which then connects to the person on the other line. This is referred to as "hub and spoke" architecture.
For example: for two MTS cellular customers speaking to each other in Thompson, their conversation travels around 1400km (to Winnipeg and back). Hope that helps!
