How long before you can upgrade your cell phone?

I know on a 3yr plan you could pay a fee to upgrade with 6 months remaining on your contract. I assume that changes on a 2yr plan. Would it be 3-4 months now?

You can upgrade at anytime.

Basically you take the no contract price of the device you get subtract the cost you pay up front. That amount is then divided by 24.

If you are wanting to renew, changes devices or move to another carrier before the 24 months (2 years) are up you determine months remaining and times it by the monthly device cost. Then toss in the admin fee if approximately $20.

I'm having flashbacks of the old way before the CRTC ruling came into effect. I wonder which way is better for the consumer? Having to pay hundreds to get out of a contract back then seems almost trivial now with the prices of the flagship smartphones out there, doesn't it?

Hello Randy!

Bell MTS does not offer early upgrades on contracts.

Generally speaking, if a customer would like to upgrade, or change their plan early, the customer would be required to pay any remaining hardware subsidy prior to upgrading their phone.

If you are interested in a new device, and are currently on term, my best suggestion would be to speak with someone in Wireless Sales & Service, who would best be able to provide any information, details, and remaining subsidy balance to you prior to upgrading.

Wireless Sales & Service is available at 204-225-5687 Monday to Friday 8:00AM - 6:00PM, as well via web chat.

Another option would be to go to a Bell MTS store, who would have access to that information as well.

I hope you find this information helpful!

Have a great day! :)
