How does are the northern communities connected to the MTS network?

How are the northern towns that have cellar service, high speed internet, home phone and TV connected to the MTS network. For example the city of Thompson, is there fiber buried all the way to Winnipeg underground? Do you use microwave antennas? Or use satellites? Just curious to know.

It really is a combination of those methods of transport (fibre, radio, and even satellite) if a community has MTS TV it will be served by a fibre transport for sure and it being a combination of buried and aerial cable.

Hi Mark, the meaning of the word digital is an interesting one, as all communication at its base layer is still analog. Even with your ethernet at home, if you dig low enough in the protocol stack it is analog. It's all just waves being transmitted in increasingly more clever ways to squeeze the most information out of analog waves.

In fact the reason our communications capabilities are increasing is the increasing ability of electronics to make sense out of more more complicated ways to send a wave.

For a good intro your can look up QPSK (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase-shift_keying)  this is lowest level of transmission that LTE uses and will drop down to this level when you are in poor coverage. When you are in medium to good coverage, it will bump you up to 16-QAM and at great signal quality will bump you all the way up to 64-QAM.  

You can think of these schemes as compression on the physical layer. (64-QAM conveys 6 bits per symbol for example). 

As a comparison point, microwave radio routinely operates at 512-QAM, with some radio systems being able to ramp all the way up to 2048-QAM. Heres a decent overview I found on the web just now:  http://mwrf.com/systems/qam-rising-1024qam-and-beyond
