How do I check data usage when I have an unlimited plan?

When I check for my data usage with the Bell/Mts myaccount app it just tells me I have "Unlimited" with no actual data usage information.

I often use my phone to tether, which means the phones data usage doesn't account for the tethered data.

This means that there is no way I can know how much data I have used during my billing cycle.

Why does the data usage from Bell/Mts not actually reflect the data used?

Without this information I think it's unfair that Mts throttles data usage at 15g as there is absolutely now way for me to know when I'm reaching that number.

As far as I am aware there is no way using my account to see the amount of data used.

I had this problem in the past before. Only way to find out is call technical support and they can tell you. That's what I had to do.

The Bell MTS MyAccount app for me shows data usage, presently 4% or .04 GB / 1.00GB.

Yes it should work fine for that. If you have Unlimited or Flat-Rate data it does not show your usage.

A very bizarre oversight on their part.

So it is really a throttling issue, not the fact that the app doesn't show usage. They need to change the app to display all usage, regardless of what plan you are on

Hello there!

Good question! You're right with the MTS MyAccount Application at the moment, there is no usage displayed for the unlimited plans. However, we will send you an alert when you are nearing the allotted amount before we implement the fair use policy.

Hope that helps clear things up!

Cheers,
Gillian

Hi Gillian,

If you re-read my original comment you will see that phones do not track tethered data; making that tracking system absolutely useless when you use tethering for internet.

Or perhaps I'm wrong with that assessment.

Hi Caleb,
I was pretty sure that tethered data usage would be registered the same as regular data usage on the device itself, but now you make me question this.  I am going to run some testing with a couple differed OS's and see how it goes.  Out of curiosity what kind of phone do you have?  I'll see if we can test on the same OS you run.

Hi Jeremy,

That would be great. I have an LG5.

Thanks,

Caleb

Alrighty, so I had some testing done with both iOS and Android, both do register tethered data as data usage on the device.  Regarding Android specifically (I have the same device so it was easier to test) you can actually see the tethered data usage on it's own.  When you go into the settings into the data usage screen, if you scroll down you can see all the apps that use data.  One of the entries in there will be tethering.  You can actually tap on that and it will give you an individual reading of the tethered data usage for the specified date ranges already assigned on the main data usage screen.
I know this isn't an ideal solution and I hope the MyAccount app is updated at one point to include data monitoring for all plans, but I hope this will at least help in the interim.
