High ping today

Is there a reason that the ping on home internet is so high today? Usually I get around 40 to 50 ping, but today it's over 400. I have checked everything on my end and it's all good here.

What site are you running your test to? I have found at times that some sites will have a high ping time and if I do to a different site the times are normal.

For example right now I just ran a speed test to 3 different sites in Winnipeg and get 3 different times, Shaw shows 51, Les.net shows 69 and Comstream Communications shows 89

Differences in ping between different host sites would not vary all that much. I would suspect that differences over 100 from normal would probably indicate signal quality or tower related issues.

How would signal quality or tower related issues affect home internet?

They are talking about the speedtest.net website and its many hosting sites, not anything cellular related :)

That was my understanding as well, which is why I was confused by Lance's post.

Or even doing a speed test to the speedtest.shaw.ca site which will test to a server in Winnipeg.

Its too bad that MTS does not have a public test site like most of the other major Canadian providers do.   I believe the MTS installers have access to a private one when they do installs to verify service.

MTS can only be responsible for the quality of service out to its first interconnection point.  If there is a problem with the Toronto IX servers for example  or the provider of the line to the host of the ping program then there is not too much MTS can do.
