Hello Paul,

Unfortunately, no there is nothing that can be done, that phone is tying up the line.
I hear your predicament as my own Mom does this often. Calling a neighbour or someone else close by to go to the house to advise that person that their phone is off the hook is the best you can do.

However, I should note that if you think the elderly person is on the phone and hasn't just left it off the hook there is a chargeable service called 'busy line intercept'.  You have to call the operator by dialing "0" if you want it done to a busy line. The operator can hear if there is conversation going on or if the phone may be legitimately off the hook.

I wonder if a cordless might work as some of them are set up to reset when a call gets disconnected?

Two drawbacks with using a cordless though are the handset can get misplaced and if it does not get put into the docking station the battery can go dead.   Also some people don't like pushing a button to answer calls.

I have to say my parents often do this - pushing the talk button to hang up the phone. I often get calls while I am at work saying that the they see calls coming up on the tv but phone not ringing. I then call on their cell phone and tell them just push the end button. Doesn't happen too often maybe once every other month. They are getting better!
