I have an HSPA BlackBerry Bold 9900 I'd like to give to my mother. She doesn't use data and just needs texting and some voice minutes. Do I have to select a smartphone plan or can I set her up on a voice plan? Like the ones here: http://www.mts.ca/mts/personal/wireless/plans/voice+plans

Hi Dan. As long as your contract for your Blackberry finished, you can activate it on a voice plan like the ones that you linked to above. You can visit an MTS Connect Store to get your mother set-up with a SIM card, etc.

@Andrew Has the policy on activating blackberry changed? As I was in an MTS connect store about 2 months a go with a self purchased unlocked Blackberry that I was told by multiple reps that I could not activate a Voice only month to month plan on and that it would require a data plan due to some agreement MTS had with BlackBerry. Please advise. Thanks.

Sorry guys! Thanks for the comment, DXintel. To clarify, voice plans are possible for Blackberries running the BB10 operating system. Unfortunately, this only applies to newer Blackberries like the Q10, Z10, Passport, etc. Older Blackberries still require data plans in order to be active on the network.

Dan, if you’d like to send us an email with your contact information to community@mts.ca we can see if there's another way that we can assist you.
