Black bars on some channels

Why are do some of the HD channels have black bars on the side of the screen? It seems kind of pointless to have these HD channels and have half the stuff on them not in HD. Sometimes if I switch to the SD channel the bars are gone but other SD channels have the black bars all around. I know I can stretch the bars away but that is PITA and shouldn't have to. Why can't MTS remove these altogether? I hate the black bars.

Hi Colin,

I can help you out with part 1 of your question right away - for the second part let us investigate a bit more on that one and get back to you.

The black bars on the HD channels are being shown as that is the way the we receive the content from our provider, we are not able to change that format.  Some of the "older" shows, like one of my favs, Corner Gas that is shown on Comedy HD are not available in HD so they get displayed with the black bars on the side.  You are correct that sometimes that same show on the SD channel is shown without the bars - in that case the provider has sent "codes" with the content that will automatically stretch the display.

Hope that helps for your first question.
