Bell, Telus, MTS, Rogers and towers

Curious if anyone knows what the deal is with the Rogers customers on Bell/MTS/Telus towers.

I know Rogers customers still have access to everything, like nothing has changed.  But what about towers currently being constructed?

Example in my town there's next to no service.  Maybe 1-2 bars if you're lucky but even then the call will likely drop.  Now Bell/MTS is currently building a tower just outside of town.  It's being built on my buddy's land and they say it will be going up in June.

Now will Rogers customers have access to this new tower?  Or did the BCE/MTS deal only allow Rogers customers access to the old network?

It's a big deal for us.  Over half our farm is outside the reach of the existing network and we all use Rogers.  This new tower is basically right in the center of our farm (we'd be within 6.5 miles of this new tower at all times when working in the field).  If Rogers doesn't get access to this new tower obviously we'd want to change providers, something that would be unpleasant since we have a lot of phones and most of them are on contracts.

Just curious if anyone has a solid answer, seems like all the network sharing posts around here are from a year ago and nobody actually knew anything, everyone was just guessing.

There is no definitive answer. Even before Bell there wasn't 100% sharing on all MTS & Rogers towers. With Bell so far the changes include MTS customers gaining preferred roaming on Bell's network outside the province and Bell & Telus gaining better access to the MTS network within the province.

Jeff - We would need to know the town or area you are asking about in order to provide a good answer.

Thanks

So the basic commercial agreement is to give telus more coverage than BellMTS.

This stuff isn't free. Telus has decided to invest what it takes to build a network and to gain access to the MTS network. Considering they want to make considerable gains in customers in Manitoba, this fits. There is no tit for tat here, it's whatever the companies want to negotiate and pay for.

But considering Bellmts doesn't want to lose customers they should do the same with Telus in Manitoba. As of right now going with Telus is the best option for anyone in Manitoba, there's a few areas west of Brandon that I cannot get any signal besides the Telus Towers one being just south of Alexander and the other is just by the Saskatchewan border on the number one. I'm sure there's other areas as well that Telus has a much better signal than Bellmts.

I wasn't part of the process and negotiations but knowing the MTS network fairly well there aren't that many situations where Telus has a tower and MTS doesn't - they may be in a bit different locations but overall the coverage is similar so there wasn't a need to have access to those towers. If there are locations that telus is and MTS isn't then those could be discussed on a case by case basis - I don't know if that is happening or not.

Cost is a factor too - these networks don't just appear out of thin air - there are the initial build costs and then ongoing licensing and operation to them. If the coverage is close to the same there is no real benefit to spending that money- it can be spend on other initiatives.

It wasn't too bad by Alexander when we were able to get a GSM signal off of Rogers , but the one by the Saskatchewan border at the turnoff to St Lazare is a big dead spot.

Exactly where is this tower going up by Letellier? I work nearby also.

On highway 201 as soon as you cross the Marais River (creek) going east out of town the tower is going up about 1/4 mile south on the first mile road on the east side of the gravel road.  Right next to where highways piled all that dirt last year for when they build the new bridge over the creek.
