Altona and Area Internet

Hi, in the past month we have been experiencing less than desirable internet service from MTS in Altona. I can say Altona because I have, along with many other people been monitoring the average speeds from all around the town. At one point we were getting 1.5Mbps (7Mbps plan) from 8:00PM to sometime during the night/morning(I usually call it a night at midnight so I don't know past then). Every time I contact MTS I get told it is due to rural congestion. I understand there are priorities in making sure the network runs smoothly all over Manitoba, however I have been reading about problems stretching from Winkler to Altona. I keep getting told that there are no plans to even consider Altona getting on the list for FiON yet smaller towns such as Niverville are already in progress, I would like to know how these towns are chosen and justified.

Another problem I am having is that MTS is charging us in Altona almost the same price as people in Winnipeg who are getting 10Mbps. I think Altona residents should get a permanent discount

Hi,

You are correct there are some congestion issues with respect to service in Altona - our Engineering team has some work underway to increase the capacity of the transport to Altona.  Some of this work was completed late last week and the team is continuing to optimize and determine the next steps to getting the service to a sustainable and suitable level.

Thanks for your patience.

The fixes to date have been adding capacity to the various transport paths and links.  We are reviewing the performance now and that will determine what further actions are needed and once that is known a schedule will be created.

In regards to the the justification for FiON services we follow the same basic principles that most companies will look at:

Current performance (customer experience), costs to improve that experience (be it a fibre deployment or other type of augment), additional revenue that will be generated by these actions and will this result in improved profit growth.

It is always good to hear from our customers about what services they would like to see in their community.

Have a great weekend!
