3 year contract

My MTS 3 Data/Cellular Contract was set to expire sometime in 2016, as of June 2,3 or 8th 2015 I understand I can walk away from my contract without penalty.

Can you tell me as of Today, May 22 2015 what are my options from MTS?

While not an official response from MTS, I was just in a Connect Store yesterday asking the same question.  My contract was 3 year and up in April of 2016.  I was told I can upgrade to a new phone today with a new 2 year contract and they would credit back the penalty if i purchased before June 3.  Just need to decide on a phone now.....

I got a similar response too, kind of. One salesperson offered and when the other overheard they said the could not.

My reason for asking is I suspect there may be a number of conversions on June 3rd, the industry feared "Dual Cohort" and I'm really not interested in getting caught up in the rollover. I'd rather be a little ahead of the game.

Hi   Not sure of what the June 3rd "dual cohort" means.  Can you please direct me to info or explain?  we have two cell contracts up at the end of May this year.

Keep in mind that the June 3, 2015 date applies to all three year contracts with end dates after June 3, 2015. Two year contracts are unaffected.

As with the end of any contract you will be free to stay with MTS or move to a competitor if you choose. Also moving between companies you are allowed to keep (port) your existing number. This works both ways too so if you are with a competitor and can't wait to be with MTS for the Flat Rate data offered in MyPlan they would be happy to welcome you in.

CoryB and Kevin Morgan have good points, and I'll add my two cents to this to hopefully clarify this for you.

We are, as always happy to comply with the CRTC's changes and mandates, among a variety of changes that we have made (including the elimination of 3 year plans, changes to plans with the new My Plan, and changes in caps among this).

Effective June 3rd 2015 you can end your 3 year contracts with MTS and look into options which there are a variety of. While I cannot give you the exact details (as it depends on what you are looking to do), I can confirm we have options for if you want to upgrade to a new MTS Phone, or keep your existing phone, or sadly if you wish to leave us.

You can visit a MTS Connect Store today and discuss this fully based on your account (which is going to be slightly different). If you are wanting to upgrade your phone you can do so as of June 3rd, or if you want a head start you can actually go in today and upgrade to a new device and we will waive the termination fee effective June 3rd (meaning that you'll have paid for your previous device subsidiary up to that date on your invoice and the rest will be waived up to the end of the current 36 month contract).

On that note, new hardware has a one time activation fee, and any balance towards a new device is paid at the store.

So in closing, absolutely check in with us to see what can be done, depending upon what you would like to do we are happy to look into this for you and hope you'll try out the new My Plan and all it's available choices.

Go figure, I typed up this nice response and then I got updated on it.

For the short and now updated summary:
If you want to upgrade your phone -today- (before June 3rd), you can go into a store and there will be no termination fees, and no charges up to the June 3rd date.
It'll be done.
Today.
So you can get a new phone, new My plan, and can enjoy your summer in style.

For the other side of it (just so I'm not ignoring anyone), if you unfortunately want to say goodbye to us though, then your contract will be terminated effective June 3rd and that'll be it for your service.

Hi Nathan:

I did just renew at an MTS store today. While the price is similar to other providers it was the quality of service that I consistently receive from MTS that helped make the choice easy.

Also, Debbie at the Marion street location was ready to handle the process on moving out my old account and set up the new contract, and there were no surprise charges. Took less than 20 minutes to complete the transaction.
